Allow us to brag. Over the last 5 years we have been so fortunate to work with some of Chicago’s top DJs. This year, they have really outdone themselves. With North Coast Music Festival coming up at Union Park in Chicago this weekend, Cage and Aquarium will have several teammates gracing stages alongside the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Big Boi, Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Axwell, Felix Da Housecat, etc. (Full Lineup). Here is the low down…

Saturday:
12:45PM – Neville (DJ Elliven) playing at the North Coast stage with Second City Citizens
4:30PM – Chris (DJ Moppy) at the Groupon Silent Disco 1

Sunday:
6PM – Dan (DJ Demchuk) at the Groupon Silent Disco 1
9PM – Avi (DJ Avi Sic) at the Groupon Silent Disco 1

Last year C+A Publik hosted a Guilty Pleasures North Coast after party at Beauty Bar with DJ Demchuk, DJ Limbs, Orville Kline. View photos from that event.

Every year, the lineup at Northcoast musical festival is ahead of its time. There is a focus on local talent, but big names have always been part of the equation as well. We are very proud to work with such an amazing group of people. Best. Staff. Ever.

Cage and Aquarium is thrilled to introduce a new, completely unique, stand-out option for our clients. With the resurgence of the authentic vinyl sound, we have spent many months digging through record shops to compile a great catalog of wedding dance floor hits in their original medium. The “Wax Wedding” option is here! This will simply be another choice we offer to clients starting in 2013. Here are a few FAQs about the idea.

Will clients want this option?
That really depends. Most clients may not be interested in this service, particularly because it comes with an upgraded fee. However, we have met many music-savvy brides and grooms who would love to have this option available to them. Wax Weddings will not be for everyone, but the people who it is for will love it! Vinyl does provide a much warmer sound than compressed digital files, and this is a perfect option for clients who want their DJ choice to turn a few heads. Wax weddings will provide a unique and credible option for brides and grooms who are looking to give their guests something to talk about. At the end of the day, clients DO NOT have to choose this service if they book Cage and Aquarium.

Many of your DJs are already on turntables, isn’t that vinyl?
Not exactly. Many of our DJs use a program called Serato. This hardware/software combination allows DJs to continue using a familiar delivery mechanism (turntables), but with the convenience of a hard drive and powerful DJ software. However, it is not authentic vinyl. Serato is amazing, and has revolutionized our field. However, the “records” are stationary, and never move from the platters. Serato uses compressed digital files that are being played through a computer. When DJs are working with real vinyl, they are flipping records, pulling them from crates, etc. There is a level of “stage presence” that is sure to be noticed by guests.

How does it work? Won’t the records skip?
We will customize every event to include as much real vinyl as our clients direct. We can now do the entire wedding with actual records, however, we will recommend that certain parts of the night be backed up digitally, (i.e. the first dance, father/daughter dance, or anytime where the DJ is making announcements). We have the technology to allow us to seamlessly transition from real vinyl to digital files if needed. With that in mind, we can provide the combination of real vinyl appeal and the peace-of-mind/flexibility that digital files bring. We will also have a team of two head DJs performing for the night since spinning all vinyl sets demands much more effort. The Cage and Aquarium studio will take excellent care of the records, so any skipping that may occur will be effectively minimized.

Why does it have and upgraded fee?
Real vinyl is a medium that requires a different level of skill and attention to master. We will staff these events to ensure that at all “Wax Weddings” contain all the usual elements of a well-orchestrated Cage and Aquarium wedding. Vinyl is also more expensive to find, purchase, transport to the event, and to upkeep through natural wear and tear. All of these things pulled together are the reason for the upgraded fee.

Please let us know if you have any questions about “Wax Weddings.” We would love to answer them!

It is hard to believe we are only 1 week out from GIMME SHELTER! Planning this event has been so flawless thanks to the incredible sponsors we have on-board. Cage and Aquarium and DJ Limbs (who will be performing at the VIP hour) have put together a mix tape in honor of the incredible folks who are making this event a smashing success already. After all, when you have a crush on someone, like we do with all of our sponsors, what else can you do? Make them a mix tape! Enjoy…

Indiewed is like a breath of fresh air in the Chicago wedding industry. It fosters creativity, draws inspired vendors and awesome bride and grooms. We had so much fun DJing on the 2nd floor of the Ravenswood Event Center. Here are a few photos of the day!

We cannot WAIT for the Indiewed show on January 28 at the Ravenswood Event Center in Chicago. We are often asked if there are any opportunities to see our DJs in action, and this is the perfect chance! We’ll be spinning for the duration of the show on the 2nd floor. It’s also a great way to connect with quality vendors in one spot. One of the things we love the most about Indiewed is that it’s not your “typical” bridal show. Indiewed is fun and full of interesting vendors, well worth a visit to anyone that is planning a wedding. We hope to see you there! Please stop by our booth to say hello and for a chance to win our “artist challenge.” Below are a few of our photos from last year’s event.

On December 23, 2011 Tyler Huffman (owner and founder of C&A) headed to his hometown to raise money for the people of Joplin, Missouri. As many have heard, Joplin was hit by one of the worst tornadoes in American history last May. Missouri is recovering, but there is a lot of work to be done there. Tyler used to tour with a ska band, Big Bad Chubba, and they reunited for one night only to raise close to $4000. His wife Shelley was there and took some great photos. Enjoy the pics and feel free to reach out if you are interested in helping with future fundraisers for the people of Joplin. Thank you.

C + A Publik is a smattering of events throughout the course of the year where our DJs, Live Musicians and Photographers perform at locations open to the public. Transparency is key to our relationship with our clients, and since we do so many private events, C + A Publik gives our clients a chance to see our team in action. We work to make each appearance unique in theme and venue. Please swing by any of our events in 2012 to say hello! We have some fun shows in the works.

What is your music background/how did you get started as a deejay? I started with the drums at about 4th grade. Eventually I bought some turntables 6 years later and been learning ever since.  Never really went back to the drums.. Would like to one day soon.

Who are your musical influences and why? Some albums that really influenced me to want to be a DJ were Pharcyde – Labcabincalifornia, Gang Starr – Moment Of truth, Dr. Octagon – Dr. Octaganologist .. Now-a-days new music I find influences me every day.. There is so much music to discover (new and old) the influences just keep piling up.

Some Djs that influence(d) me are.. Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Mix Master Mike, Q Bert, DJ Spinna, Kenny Dope, Jazzy Jeff, D – Styles, Pumpin pete, Rude One, Raj Mahal, Shazam Bangles, RTST, Djinji Brown

How do you prepare for a show? I think it depends what kind of show it is.  Usually I prepare a set by creating a new (serato/vinyl) crate for that event, and practice on the turntables, the transitions, programming, and how songs flow from one to the next.

What are some of your favorite genres and what kind of crowd do those genres work with? My initial love is Hip Hop, So that is always going to be influencing my style… More recently I have been getting into Disco & House…  I think they work with any crowd, some people might not agree.  My ideal crowd is open to something new and exciting.

Tell us a little bit about Cutz on Cutz and your inspiration for it? Cutz On Cuts grew from some scratch sessions that happened with multiple DJS getting together practicing, creating new compositions..  My inspiration is to keep scratching and real Hip Hop DJing alive in this ever changing music scene.  The Chicago Local underground scene is another inspiration.. Every week we feature different guests that you might or might not have heard of.. All great talents.. We add scratches and samples over their mix.  Check it out! > http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cutz-on-cuts

Can you also tell us about the site 10mixes.com? I used to work a 9-5 office IT job.. I could never find good mixes to fill my day at the computer.  Some friends and I would post mixes we really enjoyed on twitter.  I got the idea of putting all our tasteful mixes on a site and have it very select and eclectic.. The idea is 10 Mixes at a time.. With all previous posts in an Archive

What is one of your favorite performances as a DJ? Setting up, Planning, & performing with Rob Swift @ Dark Room would have to take the cake.. He is a true inspiration to me.. I saw his group for my first concert when I was in High School.. He is a legendary DJ and to have him on my side and be cool with him is like a dream come true.

Do you have any upcoming gigs to tell us about? I do every Third Saturdays (May 21st, June 18th, etc..) @ Simone’s . 960 w. 18th St. I play with live instrumentalists (keyboard, horns, bongos, guitar) its always fun and different.. i use the turntables kinda like my drums and let the other guys fill it in with their instruments..

4th Fridays @ Rodan (May 27th, June 24th, etc.. ) .. Soul Inspired Music.. Blaxploitation Movies .. With me,  Raj Mahal and special Guests every month..

Cutz On Cuts will be at Ultra Lounge May 13th and Sub T May 27th…

DJ Moppy is also performing at Futureshock on May 13 at O’Malley’s West – 2249 N Lincoln Ave. The event is Cage and Aquarium’s annual fundraiser for Chicago Public Schools.
